2018 Switch Software Sales Up 90% in the UK

2018 wasn’t a particularly strong year for game sales in the UK. The end-of-the-year charts show that the market generated £770 million in software revenue at retail, but that’s a revenue decrease of 2.8% from 2017. In terms of the actual number of physical games sold, 2018 dropped by an even larger 7.1% over the previous year. This can be attributed to games in franchises like Call of Duty, FIFA, Fallout, and Battlefield selling at a slower rate than their predecessors.

However, there was one extremely notable exception to this trend. Despite the overall decline, Switch actually saw gains in both hardware and software sales in the region. Switch software sales nearly doubled for the year, rising by 90.1%. Switch hardware sales also increased by 20%, but this isn’t all that impressive when you consider Switch launched in March 2017, so it had a shorter first year. Overall, Switch revenue increased by 73.4%, helping to keep the industry’s numbers as a whole from too big of a drop.
