The 3DS home menu has always looked a bit plain to me, and thankfully, Nintendo seems to agree. The hardware manufacturer is set to release an update in October that will allow users to purchase themes from a rather unsurprisingly named Theme Shop, and they will alter your background, sound effects and more.

So far, Nintendo has teased us with four themes, depicting Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario Bros, and a generic Mario theme. Keep an eye out for more information!
