Back in 2011, a dedicated modder by the name of Skelux developed a ROM hack of Super Mario 64 called Super Mario Star Road. It came with fifteen brand new levels and served as a spiritual sequel to the original game. Now Skelux has returned to create Super Mario Star Road 2, and this time he’s using the engine for Super Mario 3D Land.

While the fan project features the gameplay mechanics of Super Mario 3D Land, the level’s setup encourages players to explore the world like Super Mario 64. You can check out some of the work that’s been put into this game already by clicking the video above!

What do you guys think of this fan project? Did you play the original Super Mario Star Road? Let us know in the comments below!

Writing is half of my life. Video games make up the other half. I decided to put these two hobbies together and join Gamnesia back in 2015. I spend most of my time working at a retail store and paying off my student debt. When I'm not getting stressed about the thousands of dollars I owe my loan providers, I play tons of video games (which just puts me into more debt). I'm also currently writing a novel in what little spare time I have. It's a story I've been wanting to write for a while, but I don't want to talk about it until I have most of it completed. Any Gamnesia-related inquiries may be sent to [email protected] Feel free to follow my personal Twitter if you want (@Pindlo). I mostly just retweet things.
