It’s been just over ten years since the
BioShock series made its debut, but the last five years of that have come and gone without any new game releases. Series creator Ken Levine stepped away in 2014, as the stress was damaging his health and marriage. Despite high review scores and over 25 million sales across three games, the series has gone into an extended hibernation.
It’s been all quiet on the BioShock front since Levine’s departure, but that changed today. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier recently wrote an extensive article about what’s been going on behind the scenes at Hangar 13. Most of the article is focused on the trouble that the developer faced in the wake of Mafia III‘s mixed reception, but the story drops an unrelated bombshell partway through.
According to Schreier, some of the developers at Hanger 13 left the studio to move to the “top-secret studio next door to work on an unannounced new BioShock game.” This project has allegedly been kept so secret that for a long time Hanger 13 employees had no idea what it was, even though the studio developing it was right next door. Employees assigned to the new BioShock, developed under the code name “Parkside,” couldn’t discuss what they were working on with any of their colleagues, which apparently stoked some feelings of tension between the studios.
Little is known about the game, and it seems to be fairly early in development. One developer that Schreier spoke to said that the team designing the game is limited in scope because “it’s not ready for lots of people yet.” The only other detail we know about the game at this time is that it’s apparently being built on the Unreal Engine rather than something proprietary.
