Update: Famitsu has confirmed that this is Professor Oak’s cousin, “Nariya Oak.”
Original: Following yesterday’s Pokémon Sun and Moon update, another trailer for the upcoming 3DS games has already been released in Japan. The latest promo for the new games blends CGI scenes of Alola’s Legendary Pokémon, Solgaleo and Lunala, with in-game footage. Most of the footage shows previously-revealed scenes and features, but there’s also a very brief glimpse at a rather familiar face.
While flashing through a host of characters, the new trailer briefly shows the man pictures to the left. His name is listed as “Okido” in the dialogue box, which is Professor Oak’s name in Japan, and he certainly resembles the Kanto professor quite strongly, despite having a much darker complexion and longer hair. In this scene, Okido is seen explaining Alolan forms to the player.
Is this a new character that’s somehow related to the Oak we know and love from the first generation? Has Professor Oak simply taken on an Alolan form? Leave your thoughts and theories in the comments below!
Pokémon Sun and Moon will launch worldwide on November 18th for Nintendo 3DS.
