Back in June 2016, Electronic Arts announced a new indie program called EA Originals. This program would give indie developers a chance to show off their games while also getting some help publishing the game from EA. On March 23, 2018, Hazelight Studios released their own EA Original, a story-driven co-op game A Way Out.
Now, Hazelight Studios has announced that A Way Out had sold over 1 million copies in just over two weeks, exceeding their expectations as well as EA’s. Should EA give more games like this a better chance?
It’s no secret that EA is trying to move away from story-driven, linear games. Back in October 2017, they shut down Dead Space developer Visceral Games who was working on a story-driven, linear Star Wars game. Following that, EA CFO Blake Jorgenson had this to say: “As we kept reviewing the game, it continued to look like a much more linear game [which] people don’t like as much today as they did five years ago or ten years ago.”
Back in December 2017, a Reddit user had been accidentally getting emails from EA and leaked some details about A Way Out. The main thing they pointed out was that EA expected to sell 894,000 copies in the game’s entire lifespan. Not only have sales destroy their expectations, but maybe this could be the start of EA realizing that people still want to play games like this.
