The past few weeks have been filled with leaks, especially from Nintendo. We’ve seen new and returning characters as well as trophies leak for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U, as well as the final boss fight in Hyrule Warriors, just to name a few. In fact, the design for Wii U itself leaked about three months prior to its official reveal. Obviously game companies aren’t fond when their surprises are revealed early, but what about gamers? How do you feel about leaks?
Leaks are a mixed bag for me. When it comes to things like
Smash characters leaking early, it only serves to heighten my excitement. I don’t mind waiting for the game, but leaks don’t dampen my excitement. I especially think in the case of Smash it’s not much of an issue for me, because the game launches in Japan a month before it goes global, so we’ll know the full character roster ahead of time anyway.
What really gets me is in-depth story leaks. I’m a huge fan of the TV show Doctor Who, and the complete scripts for the first five episodes (as well as an early/rough watchable version of the complete first episode) leaked six weeks before the series kicked off. I admit I browse forums to pick up on a few minor spoilers here and there, as having hints to the story (Doctor Who is known for having complex story arcs with lots of twists) gets me excited to start thinking about what’s to come, but I stayed away from the full scripts, because
knowing a twist is certainly less fun than trying to guess it based on vague clues, or being completely surprised by it if you go in spoiler free.
So how do you feel about leaks? Where do you draw the line between it being good for raising your hype levels and bad for ruining surprises? Sound off in the comments!
