UPDATE: It seems that Ghosts did not sell one billion dollars worth of copies. The “sold-in” value, or the value of the amount of merchandise retailers received, totals one billion dollars. The “sold-through” value, the amount of money made off of consumers, is less than one billion dollars. Activision has made the handsome sum of one billion, but consumers have not bought that amount. Ghosts did not beat Grand Theft Auto V’s three-day record of grossing one billion dollars on launch day. The media is shouting that the game has sold an amount totaling one billion dollars without mentioning this is money made from retailers, not customers. However, this misconception is good PR, and the game has sold incredibly well.

The latest installment in the
Call of Duty series was released just two days ago. Call of Duty: Ghosts has apparently made a huge success by making $1 billion within just 24 hours of its release. Of course, this was the total sold to retailers, and not necessarily consumers.

The game has a huge fanbase, and it continues to grow. I know many people who absolutely love the games, and I know many people who hate them with a passion. Either way, Activision has done their job to make sure that their game is known. These games are now becoming even more popular among gamers than before.

“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation. More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard

GameStop has reported that
Call Of Duty: Ghosts was its most pre-ordered next-gen title. Microsoft reported that Ghosts has moved to the number one spot as the most played game on Xbox Live, with Activision confirming this by saying that average player sessions for Ghosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 during the same time period.

“Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet. This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title.”

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing
