Kirby Air Ride launched on Nintendo GameCube many years ago, and many players likely share a common childhood memory of goofing around in the game’s City Trial mode. Now, these same fans are in for a real treat, as its theme music is getting the coveted Smash Bros. remix treatment.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrangement of “City Trial,” which you can listen to above, is courtesy of none other than Noriyuki Iwadare. The video game soundtrack composer is renowned for his work in the Grandia and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series, as well as his contributions to the Kid Icarus: Uprising soundtrack, and has been working as a musician in the industry since 1990.

Iwadare himself is no stranger to Smash Bros., as he has stuck around as a guest arranger for the series since Brawl on the Wii. He has since been credited for his remixes of “Mila’s Divine Protection” from Fire Emblem Gaiden, “Flower Garden” from Yoshi’s Island, and “Air Man” from Mega Man 2, among others.

The Smash Bros. Ultimate website has been consistent in weekly song updates since it went live last month, already hinting at what’s sure to be a fantastic musical mosaic of a soundtrack with recognized VGM composers taking on beloved themes. So far, Ultimate‘s original sound direction is composed of:

  • Tomoya Ohtani, longtime sound director and composer of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, with his own spin on “Bomb Rush Blush” from Splatoon
  • Yoko Shimomura, who needs no introduction at this point, revisiting her own “Vega Stage” from Street Fighter II
  • Maki Kirioka (Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders), with “Noisy Notebook” from Snipperclips
  • Yasushi Asada (Castlevania Judgement, DrumMania), with “Brinstar Depths” from Metroid
  • Yoshino Aoki (Mega Man Battle Network/Star Force, Breath of Fire), with the main theme from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Which favorite track from a video game would you like to see remixed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Who would be your dream musician to rearrange that track and why? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
