David Hayter has long been the voice of Snake in the Metal Gear franchise, but much to the dismay of his passionate fans, he was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland in Metal Gear Solid V. In a recent interview on the Game Informer podcast, Hayter opened up about his experiences with Konami and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, revealing that they had actually attempted to replace him much earlier.
Despite his popularity, Konami asked Hayter to re-audition for the roles of Naked Snake and Old Snake, and Hayter holds that they were attempting to replace him. In fact, he claims that Hideo Kojima attempted to replace him with actor Kurt Russell (whose portrayal of Snake Plissken in
Escape From New York influenced Kojima’s design of Snake) for Metal Gear Solid 3, but Russell declined.
