Nintendo and Universal have been working on a theme park full of Nintendo attractions since last Summer, but today we go another exciting announcement. In addition to three Super Nintendo World locations, Universal is teaming up with The Pokémon Company to create a Pokémon theme park section in Orlando. When the park opens its doors in 2020, what sort of Pokémon adventures do you hope to encounter?
A couple of ideas immediately leap to mind for me, both of them making use of AR. If
Pokémon GO still has a faithful community of fans, Universal could capitalize on that by creating a Safari Zone experience in the park that integrates with Niantic’s hit app. Park attendees could explore a nature preserve with different environments, interacting with animatronic Pokémon in the real world while catching rare monsters in the digital world.
Another fun use of AR in a
Pokémon theme park would be to integrate it into a Pokémon Snap attraction. Players could ride an on-rails vehicle through different biomes (possibly crossing through parts of the Safari Zone) while using an app to snap pictures of Pokémon that appear in augmented reality.
