Fair warning: we are now entering the Speculation Zone where fans say crazy things and we’re crazy enough to kind of believe them. Today’s topic is the recently announced Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Although we know little about the upcoming 3DS titles other than their logos, some fans have brought forth an interesting hypothesis based on the limited information we have. In short, the games may introduce a new mechanic that allows trainers and Pokemon to combine in battle. The explanation involves Ash Ketchum’s Greninja, Burst Hearts, and the logos for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

So here’s how the theory breaks down. Check out the Japanese logos for last generation’s Pokémon games on the right. You can see a mysterious symbol among the title. Although we didn’t know it at the time, we now understand that shiny rainbow to symbolize Mega Evolutions, a mechanic introduced in the games.

Now take a look at the Japanese logos for Sun and Moon below.

There’s a shiny diamond here that’s not seen in the American logos for the game. That shiny diamond bears a strong resemblance to an item featured in a Pokémon spin-off manga called “ReBurst,” which is also depicted above. The item in question is called a “burst heart” and it allowed trainers to combine themselves with Pokémon, giving them new powers and abilities.

Considering the logos for X and Y featured the symbol for Mega Evolutions, is it a stretch to hypothesize that a “Burst” mechanic could be featured in Sun and Moon? Considering the sudden marketing push of Ash Ketchum’s unique “Ash Greninja,” I wouldn’t doubt this possibility. When initially unveiled, this new form of Greninja was speculated to be a Mega Evolution form. However, the anime episode featuring this form of Greninja has since aired. It turns out that the Pokémon changed its appearance because of its strong bond with Ash. However, the transformation has yet to be fully addressed or explored by the show, and new details could always arise. Could trainers and Pokémon combine their powers in Sun and Moon? It seems like a stretch, but we already have Pokémon based on vanilla ice cream, keys, noses, and trash bags. Really, anything is fair game for this franchise. Game Freak lost its mind a long time ago.

Hold on a second…
