With the release of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, sales of adapters for classic GameCube controllers have gone through the roof. These adapters are constantly in short supply globally due to their popularity, which has caused some to sell them for up to $80 on eBay.
However, game retailer GameStop has brought out a new bundle of four GameCube controllers and one adapter for $140. The catch? The bundle is the only way to buy the adapters from the retailer, so you aren’t actually saving any money.
Here’s how it works: assuming each controller is worth $30 on its own, and the adapter itself is worth $20 (going by the manufacturer’s suggested retail price), that would bring a bundle of four controllers and the adapter to $140 anyway, so whether you buy them together or separately, you’re not going to be saving anything either way. This really defeats the purpose of a “bundle deal”. Therefore, the only way to get the adapter from GameStop is to splash out an additional $120 on a quartet of GameCube controllers which you probably don’t need.
Nintendo is trying to keep up with demand for the coveted adapters, so you should be able to get your hands on one eventually. For now, though, you’ll either have to go online to find one or keep using modern controllers.
Do you think GameStop should be selling the bundle at the same price as purchasing separately? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
