Nintendo has been cracking down on hackers in recent months, banning prominent members of the homebrew community and Splatoon 2 hackers from accessing any of Switch’s online features. Despite their best efforts, there are still plenty of people exploiting the Tegra X1’s security problems. The latest hacker issue to surface is probably the most egregious to date, and it’s bad news for Nintendo.

Super Mario Odyssey recently received a new online mode called Balloon World, and your Switch icon is visible to other players in this mode. Hackers have managed to circumvent Nintendo’s protections and upload their own custom image as their Switch icon, and a few troublemakers have chosen to use pornographic images. As a result, other Balloon World players will see this pornographic images while playing online.

Nintendo is passionate about protecting their image as a family friendly company, so they’re sure to be furious about the situation. I would expect another wave of online bans to be coming soon. In the meantime, you may want to be cautious about letting your kids play Balloon World.
