How do you take third-person, turn-based, strategy action and transform it into a fast-paced, fierce multiplayer match? Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS exclusive Code Name S.T.E.A.M will show you how. The competitive aspect of the game will take all the rules and setup of a single player experience into a more rapid multiplayer mode. The multiplayer will allow players to enjoy it both locally and over the internet. Anyone familiar with XCOM: Enemy Unknown‘s multiplayer mode may find common ground with Code Name S.T.E.A.M‘s.

Much like the single player game, the multiplayer will focus on four-member squads. The timer is a key component of multiplayer mode in Code Name S.T.E.A.M. by granting players 60 seconds to move, fortify, heal, attack and use other character-specific skills. Some of these skills come from characters such as The Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz arming pumpkin traps or Queequeg from Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick, who can launch exploding mechanical penguins at enemy squads from long range. The only thing that provides the player with a counter-attack option is if any character in the player’s squad has an overwatch ability, other than that, the player must wait out their opponent’s turn.

Two modes have been revealed so far. A generic Death Match mode, in which players pit their squads against each other, and a more intriguing Medal Match mode, in which players must pick up various medals across the battlefield to outscore their opponent. Defeated opponents will drop medals for the victor of a skirmish to receive. Nintendo claims there is a third mode yet to be announced.

It had also been revealed that Streetpass will allow players to compare their squad’s stats on certain missions with other players they pass. These stats will be displayed on a leaderboard and if players hold the highest rank on the leaderboard they will receive a score bonus.

How do you feel about Code Name S.T.E.A.M having a multiplayer mode? Does knowing how multiplayer works interest you in the game more? Do you simply want to launch exploding mechanical penguins at enemies? Let us know in the comments below!
