Sony is known to do a lot right with their gaming software and hardware, but that doesn’t mean they’ve given their customers everything they want. One thing many fans seem to want is backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 4, so gamers could freely play games from the other PlayStation consoles. Given recent statements from Sony’s Jim Ryan, however, it does not sound like Sony is seriously considering the possibility of adding backwards compatibility to their current console.

“When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?” — Jim Ryan, PlayStation global sales and marketing head

With Ryan’s above mindset toward the functionality, it certainly does not seem likely backwards compatibility will make an appearance on the PlayStation 4 anytime soon. There is still the ability for those interested to stream some PlayStation 3 games to their PlayStation 4 system through the PlayStation Now program, but that definitely does not cover the vast library of PlayStation games throughout the years.

What do you think about Ryan’s statement? Do you think backwards compatibility is a feature worth investing in for Sony? Let us know and feel free to express your frustrations in the comments below.

Hey all! I've been a gamer since I was three. I'm one of those people with gaming so ingrained in them that watching my father play Super Mario 64 is actually my first memory I can recall. I love writing too! I'm writing an original fantasy series that takes place in another universe; it may take some inspiration from some of my favorite franchises. I've been a journalist for a few years, have worked on local and national teams, and have garnered experience assigning stories, editing, writing, interviewing, hosting a television series, running a YouTube channel, and doing other stuff that's more fun to mention in conversation. Bios can drag on. Anyway, I'm super stoked to be a part of the Gamnesia team! Thanks for having me!
