SEGA has been planning a live-action/CG movie adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog for years, and the project is finally moving forward. Filming kicked off last month with James Marsden playing the Sheriff of Green Hills. We still have no clue as to who is playing the titular blue hedgehog, but today we got official confirmation about the series’ villain, Dr. Robotnik.
Back in June, we reported that Jim Carrey was in talks to play Sonic’s nemesis, and it appears those talks went well. Jim Carrey recently spoke to a crowd at the Television Critics Association, and he used the opportunity to confirm his casting as Robotnik and to confirm that he’d be playing him as a live-action character. Carrey hopes to bring “magic” that’s “mixed with desperation” to his portrayal of the character.
Will the Sonic movie succeed where so many other video game adaptations failed, or will it be just another in a long line of disappointing films that fall short of capturing what made their source material special? We’ll find out when it releases on November 15th, 2019.
