Back in January, there were rumblings that John Cena was under consideration for the part of Duke Nukem in a live-action film, and the pro wrestler is now confirmed to have landed the iconic role. Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller recently sat down with Cinema Blend and fielded a few questions about the upcoming film.
Their interview revealed that Cena has in fact landed the leading role. However, the project doesn’t have a script yet, so there’s still potential for Cena to back out in the hypothetical situation that he’s unhappy with the film’s direction. The script itself is something that the producers are treating with the care, as they understand striking the right tone is key.
“We are working on
Duke Nukem right now. It’s going to be about tone. That’s about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don’t get the tone right then we’re not going to make the movie.” — Andrew Form
In addition to trying to recreate the fun of a movie like
Deadpool, Form and Fuller are faced with the task of making Duke Nukem a likable protagonist in today’s world.
“You know that having a misogynistic guy in today’s world, how do you make that fun and lovable and at the same time he’s got to be an incredible badass, so those are the things that we’re struggling with and we’re going to try and come out with what I hope is a really fun ride. That’s the goal, is for it to be a really fun ride.”
— Andrew Form
It looks like the
Duke Nukem film still has quite a few roadblocks ahead before it becomes a reality. Hopefully the long wait turns out better for the movie than it does for Duke Nukem Forever. Are you happy with the casting of John Cena? Do you have faith that Form and Fuller can pull off a successful Duke Nukem movie? Sound off in the comments!
