When the previously unused designs for Linkle were discovered in the Hyrule Warriors art book, they quickly garnered a strong and overwhelmingly positive response from fans. These fans—of whom many have often pondered or even hoped to see a female incarnation of Link pop up eventually in The Legend of Zelda series—initially assumed the design was meant to be a feminine form for the hero clad in green. Although she’s now being added to Hyrule Warriors as her own character with a unique backstory, series producer Eiji Aonuma says it was the fan response that inspired the team to return to the Linkle concept.

Aonuma explains to IGN:

“We had a great response from fans, especially outside of Japan, who saw Linkle in the Hyrule Warriors premium-box booklet and wanted her to be included in the game. Seeing that reaction, Hayashi-san and I talked it over and decided that we would definitely like to include her in the next title. I’m really glad we got the chance to do that with Hyrule Warriors Legends.” — Eiji Aonuma
