It isn’t surprising that Mario Kart 8 is selling well in its first week, but for the first time since launch, the Wii U is leading the way in Japan, Technically speaking, combined sales of the 3DS are actually slightly higher, but when talking about a single platform, the Wii U has a one week streak at the top. How well did it sell?

1. [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 – 325,892 (New)

11. [PSP] Heart no Kuni no Alice: Wonderful Twin World – 5,920 (New)

19. [PSV] Amnesia World – 3,898 (12,548)
20. [3DS] Kirby: Triple Deluxe – 3,858 (592,422)

As you can see, the typical trend of handheld games dominating the charts rings true, but with 325,000+ copies sold, Mario Kart 8 is holding its own. Here’s the hardware charts:

Wii U – 19,312 (9,024)
3DS LL – 18,776 (18,374)
PlayStation Vita – 12,859 (14,070)
PlayStation 3 – 6,922 (7,565)
PlayStation 4 – 6,508 (7,543)
3DS – 4,957 (4,850)
PSP – 1,421 (1,479)
PlayStation Vita TV – 1,098 (1,142)
Xbox 360 – 225 (202)

Interestingly enough, the 3DS and Wii U all saw gains compared to the previous week, while every other platform except the Xbox 360 saw losses. The Wii U had the largest jump, chiming in at just over a 100% week to week bump. Can’t wait for the US figures to release later this week.

Our Verdict

I am the current Editor-in-Chief of Zelda Informer and have been running the show here since July 16th, 2008. I've actually been running Zelda Fan sites since 1998, so I've been in this "industry" for roughly 16 years. I'm 28 years old and have two kids, one biological, the other more of a step daughter (not legally yet, but practically). I live with my girlfriend and our two kids (Aiden, age 1 and half, Melody age 3 and half). I'm attending college to create video games web applications, and I naturally love Nintendo (I run a Zeld a website after all!). For those curious, I currently own a Wii U, Xbox One, 3DS, PlayStation 3, and a gaming PC (and a gaming capable laptop too!). I do plan to eventually get a PlayStation 4, likely when more comes out I am interested in playing on the system. I do play the Wii U more than any other system I own.
