The next Mass Effect game will be following a separate storyline from the original trilogy, developer BioWare has said. Mass Effect 4 will not focus on the protagonist of the first three games in the series, Commander Shepard, and none of the other companions are likely to return either.
Edmonton/Montreal Bioware boss Aaryn Flynn said that they had “a really cool idea” for how they would continue the series. Mass Effect fans speculate that a new map interface may hint at a new galaxy setting, but Flynn is keeping his cards close to his chest. “I can’t get into that too much,“he said. “We’ve got a really cool idea for how we’re going to carry on – keep the trilogy separate but at the same time give a bunch of nods to fans who enjoyed the trilogy in the past.”
He also mentioned the real possibility of alien races from the original trilogy returning in the new game. He specifically referenced the Krogans, a race of reptilian bipeds seen in the previous games. “Definitely returning races. It wouldn’t be a Mass Effect game without the Krogans – we showed a Krogan today.”
