Club Nintendo members who registered Super Smash Bros. on both 3DS and Wii U are currently enjoying the free addition of Mewtwo as a playable character, and soon everyone will be able to purchase the legendary Pokémon as DLC. When Mewtwo was first announced, Nintendo was oddly vague about whether or not it would be available to those who didn’t register both versions. As it turns out, Sakurai and the rest of the Smash team originally planned to keep Mewtwo as a cross-buy exclusive, but eventually had a change of heart. Here’s Sakurai’s explanation:

“We originally decided to create Mewtwo on the premise that we would distribute him as a special thanks to users who bought both versions of Sm4sh, but we realized a flaw in our logic. For example, in a family with several children, each child might have their own 3DS but share the same Wii U. If we were to only distribute Mewtwo to those who purchased both versions of the game, only one of the children could play with this new character on his or her 3DS. Thus, we decided to offer Mewtwo as premium content for other users as well.”
— Masahiro Sakurai

Thankfully, Sakurai decided to make Mewtwo available for all
Smash players in the end, but those who registered both versions of the game were still rewarded with an early, free download. Mewtwo will be made available for everyone to purchase on April 28 at the price point of $3.99 for an individual version of the game or $4.99 for both versions.
