Nintendo first confirmed that they were working on Pikmin 3 during E3 2008, but development took longer than expected and the project was eventually moved from Wii to Wii U before finally releasing in 2013. It looked like the wait for another new entry in the franchise would be much shorter, as Shigeru Miyamoto announced that Pikmin 4 was nearing completion a year ago.
Nintendo has been entirely quiet on the upcoming game since then, and many have speculated that this is because development has moved from Wii U to Nintendo’s upcoming console, NX. Speaking with GameRant at this year’s E3, Miyamoto addressed the lack of
Pikmin news, explaining that the next chapter in the franchise had slipped off of Nintendo’s priority list.
“Yes, you are right, and we’re working on [Pikmin 4]. So, you know, when we’re in development we have to create a list of priorities and it has been hard to kind of fit that into that list, but we’re hopefully starting to see that on the list now.”

If you were hoping to see Pikmin 4 launch alongside NX, there’s a chance that you’ll have to wait longer than expected, but it sounds like Nintendo is looking to get back to work on the game. Nintendo has been very quiet about the upcoming NX lineup, so hopefully we’ll find out which games they have been prioritizing soon.
