Shigeru Miyamoto made a surprise appearance at Apple’s iPhone event earlier this month and revealed Nintendo’s first official Mario mobile game. Super Mario Run is an auto-running platformer in which you have to grab as many coins as you can to get a high score. In a recent interview, Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo is focusing more on mobile platforms because of their “unique benefits,” including a constant network connection and individual accounts. He stated that Nintendo is trying to create games for smart devices by taking advantage of these unique elements that they provide.

Here’s Miyamoto’s full quote:

“Certainly smart devices have their unique benefits: a persistent network connection and an individual account. And so we are looking at smart devices as an option going forward and we have more games in development for smart devices. We are looking at how we can use the unique elements of a smart device and how we can make unique games with those elements.” — Shigeru Miyamoto
