The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 1993 was a critical flop, but it has certainly found its place in history and in many gamers’ hearts as an amusing cult classic. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Mario producer Takashi Tezuka were recently interviewed by MTV, and the interview focused on the topic of possibilities for Nintendo movies. If Nintendo were ever to start fresh with a new Mario movie, how would they go about casting? Interestingly, both Miyamoto and Tezuka believe that the roles should go to actual brothers, with Miyamoto stating that twins are a must!
Question: Super Mario Bros. was one of the first games made into a movie. Who would you cast in a reboot?
Tezuka: They both run around a lot, so it cannot be someone who is a little chubby. (laughs)
Miyamoto: (laughs) We’re not sure, but it would definitely be difficult to cast. But one thing we can say about the original film is that Luigi was very young and handsome in the original movie, but Mario and Luigi are supposed to be twins. So a new cast would definitely have to be twins.
Tezuka: Rather than using some celebrity or someone famous I think for us it’s better to have people who are actually siblings even if they might not look alike. If they are family that is more important.
Miyamoto: Definitely twins!
