Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was among the list of landmark titles for the PlayStation 3. When it launched back in 2009, it was practically the graphical standard for console gaming, and it was praised to an absurd extent, with places like Game Informer slapping it with the coveted “10/10.” And, though a lot of that praise came from the game’s polished storytelling and cutscenes, apparently Naughty Dog actually went down several different narrative paths before settling on the Shangri-La adventure for which Uncharted 2 is known.
In an interview with TechRadar, Neil Druckmann, who worked on Uncharted 2 as a writer and designer, revealed that there was actually a time when Naughty Dog was seriously considering the story of Uncharted 2 as a story about the quest for Thor’s hammer. “We actually did concept art and went pretty deep down that road,” he explains.
Druckmann says that, essentially, “the way to do it” is to throw out a whole bunch of ideas, center on one, “go down that road for awhile until you hit a wall,” and then move onto the next one. One of the ideas with which they did that to a fair extent was Thor’s hammer. “In a different dimension that exists, you can play it.”
