At this year’s E3, Nintendo announced that they are working on a new kind of Mario game for their next home console. As we await the future, we’re also looking back fondly on another time Nintendo created a new kind of Mario game. It’s now June 23rd in Japan, which means it’s been 20 years since Nintendo originally released the Nintendo 64 and brought Mario into 3D with Super Mario 64.
Although it wasn’t a sales giant (selling under 33 million vs. PlayStation’s 100 million), the Nintendo 64 is one of the most beloved consoles of all time.
Super Mario 64 achieved critical acclaim and was a huge sales success. More importantly, it helped pioneer the 3D platformer genre and 3D gaming in general, inspiring countless games and developers. Happy birthday to a pair of legendary Nintendo products!
