Nintendo was once staunchly opposed to the mobile market, but in recent years they’ve warmed up to it with games like Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes. Exactly one year ago today, Nintendo announced plans to bring another major IP, Mario Kart, to the mobile market. Mario Kart Tour was scheduled to launch sometime before the end of the fiscal year (March 31st), but plans have changed.
Nintendo’s third-quarter earnings release revealed that Mario Kart Tour has been pushed back to a Summer release window. Nintendo decided to delay the game in order to “improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch.” Keeping players engaged long after release is key to their mobile strategy, and it sounds like they just needed a little more time to put that content pipeline together. Hopefully, this means it will be a worthwhile experience whenever it finally makes its debut.
