During E3 2014, Nintendo revealed two new projects that Miyamoto had been personally working on. One has resurfaced in the past week under its new title, Star Fox Guard, but the last thing we heard about “Project Giant Robot” was that its development had been put on hold. For anyone who’s been wondering about the project’s status, well, it sounds like Nintendo is still trying to figure that out for themselves. But, at the very least, Miyamoto’s comments in a recent interview indicate that the title is still around.
“‘Project Giant Robot’ [control giant robots using the Wii U GamePad’s motion controls] was something we started as a second project, and unfortunately we haven’t yet decided to turn that into a full game.”
— Shigeru Miyamoto
So Nintendo hasn’t decided to make it a full game, but the fact that they still have that option means that they haven’t given up on it just yet.
Giant Robot looked interesting two years ago, enough so that I’m pleased to learn that it’s still waiting in the wings somewhere, though not so much that I’m itching for Nintendo to release it. Hopefully they’ll be able to come to a decision about its future soon.
