Nintendo recently announced plans to discontinue Club Nintendo and replace it with a new membership program with a better value, and today we got our first teaser. After announcing that Nintendo is teaming up with DeNA to release mobile games as well as working on a new gaming platform called “NX,” Iwata revealed that Nintendo and DeNA are also teaming up to create a new membership program that will incorporate 3DS, Wii U, smart devices, PCs, and the new NX platform. The goal is to create a connection between Nintendo and customers that includes multiple devices.
“Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.” — Satoru Iwata
No details were given regarding a rewards system to replace the Club Nintendo reward, but details for the new membership program should be rolling out in the coming months. Iwata calls the collaboration with DeNA “an extremely powerful combination,” and DeNA President Isao Moriyasu pointed to his company’s strengths as “the infrastructure technology that can handle massive amount of traffic” and expertise in “analyzing user activities and quickly reflecting the insight to improve our service.” What do you hope to see from this new program?
