During a financial earnings presentation today, Nintendo announced that they are now working with Illumination Entertainment on a brand new movie starring Mario. The animated film will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri, the producer behind Despicable Me. We first heard talk of this possibility a few months ago, but this is the first time we’ve gotten confirmation that a Mario movie is on its way.
In addition to the Despicable Me series, Illumination Entertainment are known for movies such as The Secret Life of Pets, The Lorax, and Sing. The company is a subsidiary to Universal Studios, and many suspect that Illumination was chosen for this project due to Nintendo’s existing business ties to Universal, as the company is also working on the Super Nintendo World theme park.
So far, we know almost nothing about what the project will look like, as Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has only stated that more information, such as a release date, will come later. The last two days have brought us a huge amount of news from Nintendo, from updated sales figures to the announcement of an all-new mobile Mario Kart game, thanks to the financial briefings that have taken place following the end of the most recent fiscal quarter.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for the film? What do you think of Illumination’s previous work, and do you think this movie will be similar to it? Let us know in the comments below!
