Since the release of Mario Bros. in 1983, Mario has been perhaps the world’s most renowned plumber, albeit a fictional one. Mario has worn many hats over the years (figuratively and literally), but most of the gaming world always truly identified him as a plumber at heart, so it was quite a shock when an official Nintendo website indicated that his plumbing days were far behind him.

The Japanese website listed character profiles for many of Nintendo’s top talents, including the Mushroom Kingdom’s mustachioed hero. Mario’s entry highlights his sporty talents, including tennis, baseball, soccer, and racing, before nothing that “he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…

Perhaps in response to confusion from fans, Nintendo has since updated this description. On the subject of Mario’s job, the entry now reads “His occupation is plumber. However, his activity is not confined to that area.” So there you have it, concerned fans. You can sleep soundly at night knowing that Mario is still out there fixing plumbing emergencies wherever they may be…just as long as he’s not busy driving karts or playing tennis.
