Region locking has been the bane of many gamers’ existences, and some companies are starting to listen to the people after many years of complaints. Sony and Microsoft have both confirmed that their new consoles will be region free, but it seems that one company is being especially obstinate about this particular topic.
Nintendo refuses to remove its region locking on its consoles, something that has caused much outrage among its fan base. The outrage has gotten so high that a petition is making its way across the interwebs for Nintendo to remove its region locking on its consoles. Since its creation, this petition has garnered almost 14,000 signatures, which caused Nintendo of America to give an official response:
“Nintendo has no plans to remove region locking from our systems. By taking this approach, Nintendo is able to include parental controls and ensure compliance with regional standards and rating systems.” — Nintendo of America
Those reasons seem like pretty poor excuses to me, but the fight isn’t over. The petition is still alive and maybe the Big N will give in if enough people show support. You can sign the petition here.
What do you think? Is it time to end region locking for good? Or does Nintendo have good reason to remain all locked up?
