Following the tragic passing of former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, Nintendo spent two months deciding on a replacement before officially naming Tatsumi Kimishima as the head of the company. Unlike Satoru Iwata, who had a background in game development, Kimishima has a business background, serving (at different times) as the head of Nintendo of America, the Chief Financial Officer of The Pokémon Company, and the Managing Director of Nintendo Co. Ltd.
With businessman Kimishima now in charge, will Nintendo focus strictly on improving numbers? According to his first interview as President of Nintendo, that won’t be the case. Japanese publication Nikkei reports that Kimishima is quoted as saying it’s wrong to lead a gaming company on numbers alone.
One of the reasons that Iwata was so beloved was his warm personality and down to earth mentality (one of his most fondly remembered quotes is “On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer, but in my heart, I am a gamer.“), and some are concerned that Kimishima’s background means he’ll be a less endearing leader for the company. However, he has made a point of establishing that a video game company needs to be more than just business on day one, and the Nikkei article describes his personality as “soft and friendly.” We look forward to seeing how he interacts with the Nintendo fanbase and what his plans for the company are.
