As you’re likely aware, beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams took his life on August 11. We are deeply saddened by his passing, as he played an important role in many of our lives growing up. Robin Williams was an avid fan of the Legend of Zelda series, and even named his daughter Zelda in honor of the games. Zelda and her father worked with Nintendo in recent years, producing a series of commercials for Ocarina of Time 3D, and Zelda also participated in the Symphony of the Goddesses tour at times. In honor of Robin Williams and the countless lives he touched and great memories he created, Zelda fans have created an online petition to urge Nintendo to name a character in the upcoming Zelda game for Wii U after him. The petition has nearly 100,000 signatures to date, and Nintendo has now issued an official response.

Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close. — Nintendo

Like Nintendo, we send our best wishes and thoughts to Zelda and the rest of the Williams family in this tragic time. We’re sad to see someone who meant so much to so many leave this world, but we’re thankful for all the memories he left behind. If you’d like to sign the petition, you can find it here.
