Last generations consoles were always eventually going to be phased out, and while many may argue the Wii and DS haven’t had very many notable games the last few years, fact remains that some people do enjoy those experiences. For the few who are still playing games online—notably games like Mario Kart Wii—they will need to either give up the online play or upgrade to the Wii U, where the latest version of Mario Kart will be hitting soon.

Of course, not everything is being shut down. You can still buy games on the Virtual Console and services like Hulu, Netflix, and all that will go without any changes. Not surprising, given the Virtual Console can still make them money and Hulu and Netflix are not ran by Nintendo’s servers. This, however, is just a natural progression to phasing out and ending the Wii and DS era entirely. Head inside to see exactly what games will be effected by this shut down, which takes place on May 20th.

Essentially, any game that requires servers ran by Nintendo are being shut down. It is likely that any service that doesn’t require anything outside of the Wii itself or external servers not ran by Nintendo will remain up and never be turned off.

Our Verdict

Nathanial Rumphol-Janc
I am the current Editor-in-Chief of Zelda Informer and have been running the show here since July 16th, 2008. I've actually been running Zelda Fan sites since 1998, so I've been in this "industry" for roughly 16 years. I'm 28 years old and have two kids, one biological, the other more of a step daughter (not legally yet, but practically). I live with my girlfriend and our two kids (Aiden, age 1 and half, Melody age 3 and half). I'm attending college to create video games web applications, and I naturally love Nintendo (I run a Zeld a website after all!). For those curious, I currently own a Wii U, Xbox One, 3DS, PlayStation 3, and a gaming PC (and a gaming capable laptop too!). I do plan to eventually get a PlayStation 4, likely when more comes out I am interested in playing on the system. I do play the Wii U more than any other system I own.
