It has been nearly a decade since the last installment in the Advance Wars franchise, and fans have been wondering when Intelligent Systems will take a break from Fire Emblem to return to their more modernized strategy series. Despite all the time that has passed, it seems that the developer still has many members interested in giving Advance Wars new life, but don’t expect a new game just yet, as there are several hurdles the team would have to overcome first.

After the release of Intelligent Systems’ latest project,
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, the producer of three Advance Wars titles, Hitoshi Yamagami, spoke of internal interest in making a new installment but also expressed a desire to incorporate one of Fire Emblem‘s significant features in the next game: relationship building. This desire, it seems, is making it harder for him to figure out how other parts of the game might work.

“Personally, I’d love to do Advance Wars, but since it’s harder to create relationships between its characters compared to Fire Emblem, I don’t have a clear idea of what kind of setting it could have.” —
Hitoshi Yamagami, Producer of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Yamagami is not the only one at Intelligent Systems interested in seeing the first
Advance Wars title since 2008’s Days of Ruin, though. Masahiro Higuchi, a producer on Shadows of Valentia and developer of the 2001 original Advance Wars, also hinted that staff at Intelligent Systems were still excited to this day about the idea of a new game in the franchise.

“I hear some of the staff here saying that they want to make one too, so if we have a chance it’s something I’d like to do!” —

It doesn’t sound like anything is in the works just yet, but there still is a real possibility that we could see a new
Advance Wars title on the Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo Switch in the coming years. Would you be excited about that idea? What new elements would you like to see make an appearance in an Advance Wars game? Let us know down below!

Hey all! I've been a gamer since I was three. I'm one of those people with gaming so ingrained in them that watching my father play Super Mario 64 is actually my first memory I can recall. I love writing too! I'm writing an original fantasy series that takes place in another universe; it may take some inspiration from some of my favorite franchises. I've been a journalist for a few years, have worked on local and national teams, and have garnered experience assigning stories, editing, writing, interviewing, hosting a television series, running a YouTube channel, and doing other stuff that's more fun to mention in conversation. Bios can drag on. Anyway, I'm super stoked to be a part of the Gamnesia team! Thanks for having me!
