Mario Kart 8 can play online. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can too! Why then, surely the new 3D Mario game, Super Mario 3D World, will be able to access multiplayer with friends near and far using the wonderful miracle of the internet, right? Unfortunately, this is simply not true.
Super Mario 3D World will not feature an online mutliplayer mode. Looks like me and my fellow staff members won’t be able to knock each other down pits while racing to the flag as cats. I’ll have to settle for all the friends I have that live locally… which means I’m playing single player.
Koichi Hayashida gave the same reason for a focus on local co-op as the one he gave for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Nintendo wants to focus on players observing the reactions of others around them.
“I think that we’ve always wanted to focus on being able to see the other players around you. I always thought that was fun.
“I’ve always really enjoyed playing games with my children. In Super Mario Galaxy, we had the “assist play mode” that was available, but this is the first time that we’ve implemented a real multiplayer where the second player is moving a character around on screen in a 3D Mario game. And so I’m really happily looking forward to the experience of playing that with my kids.”
Yoshiaki Koizumi also said something on the game.
“And now that Peach has been included, I’m also hoping that people will be able to play the game with their girlfriends. Perhaps some of their girlfriends will find Peach as a more appealing character to play – or your wife, of course.”
TIME magazine conducted a full interview with the two developers on the game. You can check that out here.
