Yesterday we reported that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has mysteriously disappeared from the Wii U eShop just days before the game’s re-release on Nintendo Switch. The Wii U version could be downloaded for just $20 (compared to the $60 Switch version), making it quite the bargain. Since then, there have been numerous reports that the game is back, but these appear to be false.
The source of all of this confusion appears to be a (now deleted)
GoNintendo article. They claim the game is back on Wii U eShop in North America, but their source is actually just the game’s official Nintendo website. You cannot download the game digitally via the website. There’s a “Buy Physical” option listed at $20, but when you click it, it just takes you to other retailers like Amazon and Walmart…who are also not selling the game for $20 as Nintendo advertises. Most of the listings are much more expensive than the Nintendo Selects price.
Tropical Freeze for Wii U is still available at the Selects price in other regions, such as Europe. Nintendo has not issued any comment on the game’s absence in North America. We’ve provided screenshots below showing that the game does not currently show up when searched for on Wii U eShop, although trailers for it do. Searching for “Tropical Freeze” while specifying game releases only brings up zero results.
