Fans have proven to be quite pleased with the offerings of Blizzard’s first-person shooter Overwatch, but that doesn’t mean there are no further features that they’d like to see added. In some recent responses to users on the game’s Battle.net forums, director Jeff Kaplan commented on a few of these desires, including that of a map editor being added to the game. Kaplan said that he is “extremely open-minded” about the possibility, but he also warned that it will likely be some time before it happens.
According to the director, this idea is on the development team’s “long-term map.” They would love to provide such a feature to fans, but with how new the game’s engine is, developing a map editor for Overwatch would be relatively unfamiliar territory and thus require a great deal of work.
“We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday. But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public.”
— Jeff Kaplan
Aside from the map editor discussion, Jeff
also mentioned that a way to export Play of the Game clips from
Overwatch without using external software will be live before the end of the summer. Hooray!
