Fans are already having a blast playing Pokémon spin-off Detective Pikachu, and in the future they can look forward to a movie adaptation. Filming on the Detective Pikachu movie, which will star Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu himself, kicked off in January. Detective Pikachu is currently being filmed in London, and a handful of photographs have just surfaced from a recent film shoot.
The images include a look at several stars in the film, as well as numerous extras. Kathryn Newton, who is cast as “sassy journalist” Lucy, is seen in a red blazer with a “CNM” pin on it. Also pictured is Ken Watanabe, the actor chosen to play an original character named Detective Yoshida. Bill Nighy is also cast in the film (in an unknown capacity), and he can be seen alongside Watanabe, watching as balloons are released into the air.
Aside from the main cast, we can see extras dressed up in Pikachu and Snorlax costumes. There’s also someone in a green suit, a woman who appears to be in handcuffs (accompanied by police), and a crowd of people wearing silver outfits with purple baseball caps. Kathryn Newton’s Lucy character is seen running through this crowd in one of the shots.
The Detective Pikachu movie is produced by Legendary Entertainment, with The Pokémon Company’s Tsunekazu Ishihara overseeing development as an executive producer. The film is directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps), with Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch and Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perman attached as screenwriters.
