Over the weekend, Final Fantasy XIV lost a member of its player base. The 29-year old user who played as Codex Vahlda, a level 50 bard housed on the Gilgamesh server, had been brain dead since Friday after complications from renal failure. A real life friend posted about the situation on Reddit’s Final Fantasy XIV board.

Since then, a number of players were documented showing up at Codex’s Free Company house to pay their respects. Even players in other servers organized in-game vigils.A large group also gathered at a beach near the house to spell out Codex and put on a light show in his honor. This stream actually made its way into Codex’s hospital room, so the family wasn’t alone as the machines keeping Codex alive were turned off.
