Playtonic Games just announced that it has hired two new developers, producer Andy Wilson and graphic designer Gary Richards, who were both employed at Rare in the 1990s and worked on titles like Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, and Donkey Kong 64. This announcement was part of a “Happy New Year” blog post on Playtonic Games’ official website, which detailed some of the company’s plans for the year and celebrated the acquisition of its two newest employees.
Playtonic is a company that was founded in 2012 by many ex-employees of Rare Ltd., a former second-party company that created several memorable titles for Nintendo platforms, including Donkey Kong Country, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and more. After working alongside Nintendo for many years, Rare was purchased by Microsoft in 2002, and it stopped creating as much original content and lost many of its original employees. The foundation of Playtonic Games and the creation of its upcoming debut title, Yooka-Laylee, were an attempt to recall the glory days of Rare. Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, one of Rare’s most successful games, and for its development, Playtonic Games was able to find and hire many of Rare’s most talented former employees, with Gary Richards and Andy Wilson being the latest addition to the Playtonic team.
In the original blog post, Andy Wilson delivered a hopeful message about starting his new job at the company, saying that “It’s great to be back with a small team in control of their own destiny.” Gary Richards gave a similar statement regarding his new job and future co-workers: “Having spent over two decades working with most of the guys at Rare, I already know what a talented and awesome team I have joined. I can sense great things ahead.”
What do you guys think? Are you looking forward to the launch of Yooka-Laylee this March? Are you hopeful for the future of the company after the release of its first game? Is it a good thing that Playtonic is acquiring so many former Rare employees? Let us know in the comments below!
