Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee was originally targeting an October, 2016 release window, but developer Playtonic Games (created by former members of Rare) recently announced that it’s been delayed to next year. With “Q1 2017” set as the new launch window, Yooka-Laylee will be releasing around the same time as Nintendo’s next console, code named NX. Yooka-Laylee is already coming to Wii U, but does it have a shot at releasing on NX as well?
Speaking with The Digital Fix, Playtonic Technical Art Director Mark Stevenson addressed that question. While he didn’t completely rule out an NX version in the future, it doesn’t sound like we can expect one any time soon.
The Daily Fix: The delay to 2017 has meant that you’re going to be launching potentially close to the release of the Nintendo NX, meaning that Yooka Laylee may be one of the last games to hit the Wii U. Is there any plan to relaunch the game on the NX at a later date?
Mark Stevenson: At this stage we’re aiming to just release on what we promised on Kickstarter – which is a lot for us as a team of twenty people!
Stevenson confirmed that Playtonic is aiming for a simultaneous release on all platforms, which means they’ll be launching
Yooka-Laylee on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS all at once. I can’t say I blame them for avoiding a commitment to NX at this time, but hopefully it’s something they’ll consider after the initial launch.
