Pokémon Sun and Moon finally launched two weeks ago, and gamers across the globe have been enjoying the lush world of Alola and the new creatures within it. This was the major discussion segment on this week’s episode of Nintendo Week, our Nintendo-themed podcast here at Gamnesia. Though Alex is waiting for the rumored Nintendo Switch version of the Gen VII games to launch, Ben and I have been really enjoying
Sun and Moon. The wolrd of Alola is fresh and lively, the art direction is leagues ahead of previous Pokémon games on 3DS, and the music is delightful. There are a number of very welcome shake-ups to the Pokémon series’ gameplay, like replacing Gyms with Alola’s Island Challenge, replacing HMs with the new Ride Pokémon feature, introducing the new PokéPelago system, and tons more. Not to mention the incredibly diverse cast of Pokémon you can find in Alola.

That’s not to say these games are perfect, however. We both find it extremely obtuse and a little patronizing how much dialogue constantly interrupts the gameplay, and how often the game lets you discover new areas only to tell you you’re gone too far and fade to black to send you back. It ruins the immersion of such a beautiful world and in theory shouldn’t have been hard to avoid. We have more small gripes about the menu system, the wild battles’ new “Call for Help” mechanic, its world and dungeon design, and more.
