Pokkén Tournament has been out in Japanese arcades since last Summer, and it launched globally on Wii U about two weeks ago. The Tekken-inspired Pokémon fighting game has a beautiful visual style, but if it looks a bit unpolished on the Wii U, there’s a good explanation. Digital Foundry went hands-on with the game for a detailed performance analysis, and they found that it runs at a mostly-steady 60 frames per second (dipping a few frames below here and there), but it runs at a resolution of 960 x 720.
Most new games, including most Wii U games, now run at a resolution of at least 720p (1280 x 720), with 1080p being more desirable. Digital Foundry speculates that Bandai Namco Entertainment opted to sacrifice the higher resolution in order to maintain a steady frame rate. You can check out their video analysis by clicking above.
