One of the key selling points of Nintendo 3DS is the glasses-free, stereoscopic 3D feature, but the Pokémon series has used this ability very lightly. Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire each only use the 3D effect in battles and in certain specific locations, but it sounds like Sun & Moon will use it even less.
The Pokémon Company recently held some special preview events for Pokémon Sun & Moon in London and San Francisco, allowing a handful of journalists to go hands-on with the upcoming games. Early impressions from the events made no mention of stereoscopic 3D, and GameXplain has since clarified via Twitter that it was not available on the overworld or in battles during their demo. IGN’s Jose Otero added that he was told by the event staff that stereoscopic 3D will only be available for the Pokémon Snap-inspired Poké Finder minigame.
