Just over two years ago, Nintendo took its first step into the mobile market with the launch of Miitomo. The social app generated some buzz at launch, but it wasn’t particularly well supported as time pressed on and it failed to generate the level of interested and profit necessary to justify its continued existence. As such, they announced plans to shut Miitomo down back in January, and the fated day has arrived.
As of this morning,
Miitomo is officially discontinued. If you attempt to access the app now you’ll just get a maintenance screen. There’s no way to transfer any of your Miitomo content to other Nintendo games or apps, so unfortunately this is truly the end. It’s just the beginning for Nintendo’s mobile plans though.
Prior to pulling the plug, Nintendo issued this final message to fans:
Thank you for playing Miitomo!
As previously announced, the Miitomo app will no longer be available as of May 9, 2018 at 12:00 AM (PDT).
We’ve come a long way since the app was launched, and once again we want to thank everyone who’s been involved.
We hope to go on to even bigger and better things in the future with Nintendo, and we hope you’re there to share the fun.
We hope to see you again soon!
