Way back in 2015, the popular Adult Swim show Rick and Morty featured a joke about Rick scalping Zelda-themed Nintendo 3DS consoles. In the second season’s fourth episode, Rick buys up all of the limited edition handhelds themed after A Link Between Worlds when they’re on sale and plans to flip them for a profit later.

As it turns out, that joke has its basis in reality.
Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland (who also voices Rick) revealed in a recent interview that he actually did buy up a bunch of limited edition 3DS consoles when writing that episode. He then felt guilty, and turned to charity to clear his conscience.

“All the stuff Rick says in that scene in the episode was actually true. My plan was to sell them off here and there over the years but I just had so many that I still have them. It’s also important to know that I felt bad after I bought them all so I went and purchased 15 2DS systems and a bunch of games and donated them to the children’s hospital of Los Angeles. I became part of the problem that day. I became a scalper. CHA-CHING.”

Three years later, Roiland apparently still has the limited edition handhelds, and he’s finally getting around to selling one. The 3DS, complete with an autograph from Roiland and a drawing of the two titular characters, is
up for sale on Witchsy with a price tag of $1,000. That’s a slightly higher asking price than the $230 Rick claims he’ll flip them for. It’s unclear whether or not this sale will be used for charity like his 2DS guilt-purchases were. Now that Rick and Morty has been renewed for 70 more episodes, he probably doesn’t really need that extra $1,000.
