Back in 2016, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company surprised Japanese audiences with a very different kind of Pokémon game. Detective Pikachu ditches the traditional monster-catching gameplay for crime-solving, and it stars a talking Pikachu. Earlier this year the 3DS game made its way to the West, and around the same time, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures began filming a movie adaptation.

We’ve heard little about the project since filming kicked off in January, although there were some
leaked photographs showing off a few scenes. Today we may have a few more details in the form of an allegedly leaked plot synopsis. Here’s the latest from the rumor mill:

“The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu become reluctant partners on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live in partnership in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.”

This synopsis, if true, sticks pretty close to the plot of the game. Tim’s age has been changed from 18 to 21, but aside from that, it seems the movie will have a similar origin for its characters. It will be interesting to see how they pull off a “hyper-realistic” world, blended together with Pokémon.
